Mountain Flying

Clinic Description:

The Mountain Flying Clinic teaches important information about how to fly at “real” mountain sites that are obviously much different than hill-type sites where pilots are usually initially trained. This two-day event is geared specifically toward P-2 pilots, and should be taken as soon as possible after they complete their P-2 certification. Class instruction has been developed for those relatively new pilots who are now ready for a greater challenge and change of view.

The Mountain Flying Clinic or equivalent experience is a prerequisite for the Thermal Clinic and the Cross-Country Clinic.

What The Clinic Includes:

  • Pilots will visit all of the flying sites and landing zones used on a regular basis in the Salt Lake Valley and Utah Valley.
  • Each pilot will fly sites that are deemed most appropriate for their skill level (weather permitting).
  • We will visit numerous appropriate, inappropriate, and surprise landing zones for evaluation.

What The Pilot Will Learn:

  • How to pioneer a flying site.
  • How to safely fly in the mountains.
  • How to analyze the safety and potential for any particular flying site.
  • How to quickly and appropriately plan the best approach to any landing zone.
  • Weather tendencies, patterns, and considerations.

Prerequisite:

  • P-2 rating.
  • Spot landing proficiency.
Ken’s thermal clinic was profound.
Free Bear, New Mexico
To have fun flying I have to know what is happening with me, my wing, and the air. But being new to paragliding (under 20 hours of air time), I don’t have enough experience to judge these things well enough. Since I fly in the mountains at home (southeast Arizona), I decided I needed to know more about this aspect of paragliding, so I took Ken’s Mountain Flying Clinic. It was a great experience because I learned what was safe and what was bad. We flew several diverse sites to provide a broad base of applicability. Now at my home sites (all mountains), I’ll be able to evaluate the conditions, know better what is happening with the air, pick better flying times, and therefore increase the fun-factor, which is my whole reason for flying paragliders.
Daryl Elam, Benson Arizona
What did I learn?  That mountain flying is a whole different ball game compared to flying at Point of the Mountain. One has to pick conditions, flight path, and LZ approach very carefully. I learned how to evaluate the site and conditions in a way to help minimize the chances of having an unpleasant experience. Also, how to choose a route down the mountain that will increase the chances of making it to the LZ. I tend to be very conservative in my flying – I try to keep it as safe as possible. Ken helped me in being able to decide what is a safe flying situation/condition and what is marginal or a bad idea. I now know more about launching in the mountains, landing in tight spots, and observing conditions before committing myself to flight. In the future, I would like to be able to “discover” my own flying sites. This is a first good step in that direction.
C. Christopherson, Utah
This clinic widens the scope of my flying experience under controlled and coached conditions. It teaches about favorable vs. poor flying conditions at all possible sites, not just those we visited.
N. Parker, Utah
I would recommend this clinic to others because of the valuable information given and to learn about the Salt Lake sites. I learned more about terrain features and their functions related to safe flying.
P. Beeson, Mountanna

Thermal

Clinic Description:

The Thermal Clinic introduces and teaches the fundamental techniques and theories of thermal exploitation. Thermalling is finding and staying in upward moving parcels of air that can literally heighten the adventurous sensation of paragliding to a whole new and exciting dimension, because a thermal has the thrilling anti-gravity quality of “lift”. And mastering the art of thermalling is essential for anyone serious about experiencing the greatest possibilities of paragliding flight. Imagine using nature’s own elevator to rise up to exhilarating atmospheric heights, and then using those same thermals to go on extensive cross-country excursions far beyond your horizons of expectation.

Thermalling should be approached cautiously and with a high degree of safety awareness. It is not something that can be done safely without a great deal of instruction.

The Thermal Clinic or equivalent experience is a prerequisite for the Cross-Country Clinic.

What The Clinic Includes:

  • Three information-packed days that will improve your thermalling knowledge, understanding, and efficiency.
  • Up to sixteen hours of classroom time that will give you all the information you need to convert into practical thermalling skills.
  • Functional games and exercises used to simulate and demonstrate principles of thermal flying that help build skills on the ground before ever getting into the air.
  • Flying thermal sites and in thermalling conditions that are appropriate for each individual pilot’s skill level complete with radio communication coaching and evaluation (weather permitting).

What The Pilot Will Learn:

  • Thermalling efficiency.
  • Reading and deciphering terrain features for thermal triggers and reservoirs.
  • Reading and understanding cumulous cloud formations and what they tell us about the type of thermals that are feeding the cloud.
  • Recognizing cloud types that may not be necessarily advantageous for thermalling.
  • How to “work” cloud base.
  • The many weather related specifics that determine favorable thermalling conditions.
  • The best launching techniques to use during thermic conditions.
  • Landing in thermic conditions.

Prerequisite:

  • P-2 rating.
  • Taking a maneuvers clinic before or soon after receiving a P-2 rating is highly recommended.

Cliff Curry, Utah
Ken Hudonjorgensen’s Thermal Clinic was a great experience. It will be a great resource for me as I strive to develop my thermalling skills. The instruction included valuable practical drills to prepare for properly handling, using, and mapping thermals as well as technical instruction to help understand how thermals form and how we use them to fly. More importantly, we received invaluable instruction on flying in thermals safely and in addressing the all-important questions of whether and when to fly under thermic conditions. We learned patience and careful analysis from a very wise instructor. Thanks Ken.
David Nelson, Sandy, Utah
Great visualization techniques!  I took the clinic to understand more about thermals and thermalling and these objectives were met effectively. Strongly recommend this clinic to anyone who seeks flying at locations other than The Point. Thanks Ken – definitely worth price of admission!
Jeff Silk, Orem, Utah
The Thermal Clinic was Fantastic!  The ground school was superb. The thermal skills and object lessons made a big difference in my learning curve. They are great lessons. You did well in developing them. For me, the clinic was “A+”. We had a small class. The participants each brought their own expertise. Great chemistry. And after two solid days of instruction to then have success thermalling, … it’s as good as it gets!
Nathan Millward, Utah
I went to the clinic knowing nothing and came out feeling confident about thermalling conditions, meteorology, wing behavior, mapping thermals, sights, and flying methods to make the most of thermalling a paraglider. Above all, Ken stresses safety and good decision-making. Now I feel very good about practicing and honing my skills flying thermals. This was time well spent and it will increase the fun-factor in my flying.
Daryl Elam, Benson, Arizona
I just finished the Rat Race Super Clinic working with three really great instructors, but I’d like to give special credit to Ken Hudonjorgensen for some things he helped me with.I arrived at Woodrat Mountain somewhat traumatized from accidentally spinning my glider a couple of weeks before. My first flight off the mountain I found my bump tolerance to be terrible. I was tense and fearful. I could have stayed up, but chose to land after only 10 minutes because it just wasn’t fun. That afternoon Ken gave a talk about fear and how it shuts down good awareness and decision making. He said rather than be fearful of the bumps and your wing moving around just think of it as information. It’s your wing communicating with you about the air you’re in. If you’re tense and fearful you will not be nearly as safe or able to feel what your wing’s telling you.  Ken shared a mantra he uses if you feel fear creeping in. “In peace my safety lies”.  That talk and that mantra so helped me the next day and the rest of the week. The other thing Ken so helped me with was understanding what my wing is communicating to me. I’ve never known anyone as knowledgable about thermals and able to teach what you will feel with different aspects of thermalling. I left the Rat Race Super Clinic a much better thermal pilot because of Ken.If you you ever get a chance to work with Ken, it will be time well spent and a tremendous learning experience.
